The health and safety of employees is of paramount importance and although operations advance, we cautiously proceed as all business operations enforce very strict healthy work environment policies by the Ministry of Health and other statutory bodies and are guided by these measures. Behavioural changes to ensure social responsibility on an individual level must never be discounted.
Most Companies in the industry were able to weather the storm and when the announcement was made to resume operations had the support of staff, with some instances of workforce realignment. A sense of relief was the common thread as Companies were able to offer work to employees in order for them to be able to provide for their loved ones.
We are currently facing the single largest threat to humanity we have seen in recent generations, the Covid-19 pandemic has touched every aspect of life. At this time our main focus should be on the preservation of human life through promoting adherence to all safety protocols and guidelines set by the World Health Organisation and the Government of Trinidad and Tobago. As leaders we must also look at the long term impact of this pandemic and look to the future with a sense of optimism, the possibilities are endless to create a new future for Trinidad and Tobago.
The Construction Sector remains a significant employer of hundreds of thousands of people across the spectrum from unskilled laborers to C-Suite Executives. The onset of the Covid-19 Pandemic challenged us all to stop and re-evaluate why and how we operate. The TTCA accepted that challenge because we believe that the Construction Sector is essential to the economy and any recovery efforts. No longer was safety seen as only the traditional steel toed boots and hard hats. Our "Site Operating Guidelines during Covid-19: Protecting our Construction Workforce" provided construction companies with a roadmap for operating in a safer manner; we have seen our members and the industry at large adopt these measures.
The effects of the Pandemic are however still making waves and ripples across the supply chain. Working with strategic partnerships and policy makers is more important than ever so that we can get back to building a resilient nation.
The greatest lesson that Covid-19 has taught us is we need to unite to win this war. All of us have a responsibility to adhere to the Covid-19 Health and Safety Protocols, which will protect us and allow the economy to reopen. The Covid-19 pandemic has a significant impact on the construction industry which is tactful to the economic cycles. On the positive side, construction can stimulate the recovery of the economy.
